Faculty Orientation for Online Teaching

The new Faculty Orientation for Online Teaching is currently available and is an ongoing training opportunity. This course is delivered through Vista and is a self-paced training course. Faculty are asked to complete this course and the final assessment with an 80 or above prior to teaching their first online course with LSCS.

Orientation Purpose:

This orientation course is designed to be a self-directed learning opportunity focused on introducing you to the online classroom and providing you the resources you need to be a successful instructor in the Lone Star College-Online environment.

Orientation Expectations:

This orientation course is delivered through the Learning Management System (LMS), Blackboard Vista, that you will be teaching in, thus simulating your actual classroom environment and is formatted with the Uniform Design model adopted by Lone Star College-Online. More information on the Uniform Design model is provided in this module.

This course is designed to be completed within four hours; however, this is a self-paced orientation course and could involve more or less time. In other words, once you begin the course, you are at liberty to move through at your own pace.

Self-check activities are provided throughout each learning module, as well as plenty of material to review and references to additional material. There is an end-of-course assessment which determines your completion status. You must score an 80 or above on this assessment to be certified to teach online courses.

Orientation Objectives:

  • Participants who complete this orientation will be able to:
  • Recall the purpose of Lone Star College-Online and utilize the services made available.
  • Evaluate best practices and standards for student success including the Seven Principles of Effective Teaching, Uniform Course Design model, Quality Matters Rubric, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Section 508 compliance in order to employ these in the online instructional environment.
  • Describe online communication methods such as email, chat, instant message, blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, and also determine when to use of these tools appropriately.
  • Review the importance of Instructor Feedback and employ a clearly stated policy for each online class.
  • Review and endorse netiquette guidelines for the success of the online learning community.
  • Examine the online environment and practice various tools within that environment.
  • Identify the classroom tools available to you.
  • Utilize online classroom build, teach, and student tools appropriately.
  • Retrieve additional information and assistance as needed from resources provided by Lone Star College-Online.
